2027 Quilters’ Guild of Acadiana Challenge

“Black & White and READ All Over”

This year's quilt challenge is a reinvention of a past challenge presented many years ago in our guild. The difference this year is the inclusion of text, words, books, or reading, etc. and the limitation of only REDS if you choose to add color!

Guidelines:

❖ Quilt or Wall Hanging-- must be a typical 3 layer sandwich in whatever construction or quilting methods work best, and must have a finished edge, bound or faced. The back of the quilt can have any color(s).

❖Any size is acceptable. Any style, any pattern or even no pattern.

❖The word “READ” could be interpreted as “RED” if desired as long as “words”, in some way or other, are included in your design.

❖ Limit your color usage to ANY or ALL Reds you can find if using color.

❖Must include a hanging sleeve as we would like to be able to display these at some point. Corner Triangles are fine if piece is small enough.

❖Must include a label with info on maker, quilter, and pattern if using one, size and title and whatever else you’d like to include.

Some possible ideas:

❖ A line from a favorite song, poem, prayer or quote  

❖A scene/portrait of a book reader

❖ Hidden messages

❖Words about your favorite subject

❖A momento… a letter to or from a loved one

❖A motto/mantra, or a tribute

❖Words of encouragement

❖ A word quilt for a child just learning to read

❖A favorite recipe

❖Postcard Travels

Some possible approaches:

❖ Fabric with text/words printed on it

❖ Appliqued words

❖Pieced words

❖Embroidered words (machine or by hand)

❖Collaged words Painted or Printed wording

It could even be “PUNNY”

❖ “Diving into a good book”

❖“The Pen is mightier than the sword”

Entries will be collected at both February 2027 meetings. The membership will vote on all of the entries at the March 2027 meetings and the awards presented at the April 2027 meetings.
